One of the recognized species of native trout in Colorado, the Colorado River cutthroat was fished to the point of extinction in the late 1880s. It’s population was further threatened with introduction of other non-native trout species. It is estimated that the trout is now found in about 14 percent of its historic natural habitat.

A current project is underway to dedicate 23 miles of river corridor to solely cutthroat trout in an Animas tributary whose headwaters are located just west of the backdrop mountain. Props to who knows which tributary this is, containing the best cutthroat fishing is in SW Colorado.
