Mt. Adams. Known as Klickitat by the Puyallup tribe and Pahto by the Klickitat tribe.
.
When Klickitat and Wy’east (Mt. Hood) fought for the affection for Loowit (St. Helens), they destroyed the land, burning whole forests and villages in a rage of passion. Their father, chief Sahale, became angry, turning where the brothers crossed the Columbia River into a tumultuous cataract of boils and thundering waves. Then he smote the three lovers where they stood and turned each into a mountain.
.
Klickitat the second brother from the North, had rough ways, but a tender heart. So he stands with his head bowed in sorrow to see the beautiful Loowit covered in snow.
